"You've got this!". How many of you have said this to someone or have been told this before? Many of us have. Why do people say "You've got this!" and what does it mean to have it? What is this 'thing' that you've got?
A teammate yells "You've got this!" across the field to the pitcher in the 9th inning, with 2 outs and a full count. One pitch away from a win. A father and mother tell their daughter "You've got this!" as she attempts to get her driver's license for the first time. A supportive colleague sends you a last minute “You’ve got this!” text as you enter the meeting room to deliver a key presentation to some important decision makers for a project you are leading.
Why do we tell people “You’ve got this!”? We tell people because we want to encourage them and we want to express our genuine confidence and belief in their abilities. If we are being honest, we’ve probably all been in situations where we could have benefited from hearing the words “You’ve got this!”.
When do we need a “You’ve got this!” statement the most? We need it when we’ve prepared, we’re ready, we have the ability, yet for some reason, we are lacking in our self-belief or perhaps we’re simply overwhelmed. Our confidence is shaken and self-doubt settles in. We don’t think or feel that “we’ve got this!”
I'm here to tell you that "You've definitely got this!" You've got this great opportunity every single day to be awesome, to make a difference for yourself and others and to live intentionally. You've got this responsibility to focus on your growth so you can be a better leader in all areas of your life. When you plan, prepare and practice, you will be ready to perform when it matters most.
