Isn't it fantastic and amazing how easy it is for us to connect with so many people these days through social media, email and texting? People continue to enhance technology and develop new applications to allow us to connect with each other all around the world. Even as I write this post, I'm watching a Facebook live training session on 'speaking tips' delivered by a gentleman who is in his car. He's training people from his car! I love it! But you know it causes me to wonder if we are really connecting with people. I mean yes, we are connecting people together through technology and we are definitely communicating with people. But are we investing time to intentionally connect with people on a deeper more meaningful level that really shows we value them?
It's so easy these days to fly through my newsfeed on either Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook and quickly get up to date on what's happening in people's lives. I feel like I know what's going on and what people have experienced, but I don't really know. I see the highlights but I don't fully understand. It's pictures and text without emotional expression. Let me explain.
A friend of mine named Charlene recently completed a very significant personal goal. She climbed Mount Katahdin (the photo in this post), the highest mountain in the state of Maine. It took her 13 hours to complete the hike. The pictures she posted on Facebook were beautiful and she journaled various aspects of her hike. I took a moment to post my congratulations to her on Facebook for her awesome accomplishment, enjoyed a few more pictures and carried on.
I didn't think much more about her hike until my wife made raspberry jam. Alright, I know that's a big leap and gap in the story but stay with me. This all connects, trust me. My wife posted a picture on Facebook of a jar of her homemade raspberry jam with the comment of "Oh my....so good! #homemade #nofilter #raspberryjam". Within minutes, Charlene commented "Wanna make a trade" and is bartering for a jar of this jam by offering up a pan of Mars Bars squares or healthy brownies. My wife picked the healthy brownies and I picked the Mars Bars squares (which I have come to realize are really called Char Bar squares). Charlene agreed to provide a pan of each for 3 jars of jam. Good trade and everyone is happy!
It was time to meet for the exchange. Charlene came over to our house and we had a really nice visit. We had a chance to ask her about her hiking adventure and the significance of reaching the summit of Mount Katahdin. It was during this conversation that a deeper and clearer understanding was established. I learned through her emotional expression of her words how challenging the hike had been and how physically demanding it was to ascend and descend the mountain. I could see the thoughtfulness in her eyes and hear the passion in her voice as she shared the personal reasons for climbing the mountain. I listened as she explained, with a few tears forming in her eyes, how meaningful it was for her to have some quiet reflective time alone at the summit. I couldn't get all of this from a few pictures and text on Facebook. Charlene communicated about the experience over social media. But she connected me to the experience through our conversation and I got it!
